On my hall, I am unfortunately the token "emo kid". Which seems funny to me... mostly because I make fun of emo kids.
Which is neither here nor there.
I had a nice little realization last night at the concert. More often than not, I tend to only listen to a couple songs from the bands I like. 1 or 2, maybe their 'big hits' but not always, just the ones that I tend to connect to. Except for a handful of bands.
Five Iron Frenzy, The W's, Dashboard Confessional, Something Corporate, Tegan and Sara. Essentially anything these bands have put out, I eat up and genuinely enjoy it. After having gone to see the Spill Canvas last night. I very much add them to that list. Lots of passion in his voice, meaningful lyrics, the requisite *clap* in the mid-pause of a song for the faithful fans to show they were paying attention (I'm looking at you too, Saves the Day). What makes it better still was that he (the lead singer) was much better live than on his albums. I really enjoyed the set, and it was only like 5 songs.
I can't wait for their next album.

I know I've made you describe "emo" to me before....looks like you're going to have to do it again.
Glad you had a good time....hopefully you have some good stories to share as well.

We make fun of them. Why? Because it is easy.
The more enjoyable term for emo, which is where I tend to fall and plenty of other cool cats do as well, is the group of music by Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World-type bands.
In this case, emo tends to be music that was more likely written in a private journal than a Word Processor. It tends to talk more about love and loss in a relatable/firsthand way, rather than a more disconnected Teeny Boppers style*. Also emo has more of a personal coping mechanism sound, as if someone wrote it to get past something emotionally trying (hence, the name) rather than to specifically write a song for their next album.
Also, emo is amazing. :)
* I'm looking at you Christina Aguilera. Where do you get off trying to be the inspiration for girls who are called ugly? You are a A-list super star, and you think people EVER called you ugly, or that you can relate to legitimate heart break from jerk classmates and their insults to insecure girls? Please, who do you think you are kidding?
